Hunting & Trapping

Highly seasonal; peaks Oct–Nov

About this role

Hunting is the we-conomy's wild protein dividend. In the northern plains and parkland belt, a well-managed 150-acre property can support meaningful harvests of white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, pronghorn, pheasant, grouse, and wild turkey. A single adult deer yields 80–120 lbs of boneless meat. Trapping serves a dual function: supplemental protein and income from furs, and predator control protecting Role 02 (Livestock).

Key processes

Wildlife habitat management

Maintain diverse edge habitat: woodland strips adjacent to grassland meadows adjacent to water sources. Plant food plots (turnips, brassicas, corn) in strategic locations.

Season planning and regulations

Each state has specific seasons, bag limits, and licensing requirements. Apply for preference points in draw states (Montana, Wyoming) years before you plan to hunt.

Field dressing and meat care

Cool the carcass as quickly as possible. Field dress immediately. In cold northern weather, a deer can hang 7–14 days for dry-aging. Coordinate with Role 06 for processing and storage.

Predator trapping

A basic trap line for coyote, fox, and weasel substantially reduces livestock losses from Role 02. Check traps daily.

Teaching hunting to the next generation

Hunter education courses are free in all states and are the appropriate starting point for children (Role 15).

Critical warnings

!

Never hunt without understanding local regulations. Out-of-season take carries serious legal penalties.

!

Meat safety is non-negotiable. Improperly handled wild game can carry pathogens.

!

Trapping requires state licensing and strict compliance with legal methods.

Key insight

Highly seasonal. Better structured as a specialty that 2–3 skilled people lead, rather than a standing headcount of 3–4.
