Perimeter and livestock fencing
A 5-strand high-tensile electric fence is the most cost-effective perimeter option. Inspect quarterly and after any storm.
Predator management
In the northern plains, coyotes are the primary threat to poultry and young livestock. Livestock guardian dogs (Great Pyrenees or Anatolian) are the most effective long-term solution. Coordinate with Hunting & Trapping (Role 04) for active predator removal.
Weather monitoring and emergency response
The collective should have: a weather monitoring protocol (assigned person checks forecasts daily in winter), a blizzard protocol (everyone accounted for before storm hits, livestock secured, generator fueled), and a flooding protocol. Install a weather station on the property.
Emergency communication
Satellite communication capability (Garmin inReach or Starlink backup), NOAA weather radio, and GMRS radios for on-property field communication.
Fire prevention and response
In the northern plains, grass fires are a genuine seasonal threat. Maintain cleared defensible space around all structures (100-foot minimum). A clear evacuation protocol is essential.
Community emergency drills
Run a blizzard drill annually before winter. Run a fire evacuation drill annually. Document and post emergency protocols in the communal space.
